As Capcom continues to work on Resident Evil Requiem, ensuring it fires on all cylinders to keep us on edge when it launches early next year, director Koshi Nakanishi has shared a few thoughts regarding what he’d like to see from a potential Resident Evil 7 Remake further down the line.
Capcom has seen its fair share of success with the modern reimaginings of its older entries in the series and, although a RE7 Remake won’t materialize any time soon, its director – Nakanishi who also helmed development for the title that revitalized the franchise in 2017 – would love to see the Baker family reunited with a lost member that was cut during development.
Resident Evil 7 Remake Cut Baker Family Member
“There was also a character, another member of the Baker family, who we ended up having to cut from the game, so with a remake we could maybe add them back in,” he told VGC when asked about changes he would like to make in a potential Resident Evil 7 Remake.
“Lucas was supposed to have a girlfriend who lived with them, and she would play a part in the story. I think it would be interesting to produce a Director’s Cut with that content added back in.”
A subtler, and perhaps surprising, item on his list is “the amount of time between the door closing, you being faced with complete darkness, and the torch turning on,” when first entering the Baker family house, which “never quite sat right” with Nakanishi.
“We had to make it not too long, so players wouldn’t be confused and run around in the dark, but if it was too short there would be not atmosphere. I would like to tune that a little bit more. There are various other little things like that throughout the game.”
He also mentions that his “desktop is covered in proverbial post-it notes with things I wanted to do but didn’t get around to,” which potentially bodes well for a Director’s Cut or full-on remake, should either happen further down the line.
That being said, Resident Evil Requiem is currently stealing the spotlight, and Capcom’s plans for future remakes remain unclear at the moment.
Resident Evil 5 would be the next mainline entry in line to be remade, but since it – and to a greater extent RE6 – are seen as more controversial entries in the series, the developer could take longer to rework certain parts or, why not, turn towards spin-offs.
We’ll have to wait and see, but replaying Resident Evil 7 with one more deranged member of the Baker family giving us trouble as we’re struggling to survive definitely sounds like a “good” time.
