TL;DR

  • Delta Force has a wide variety of game modes
  • The title includes team-based FPS modes and an extraction shooter ‘Operations’ mode
  • The Black Hawk Down story mode is a separate 28GB download from the main DF download
  • Not all of Delta Force’s modes may be available at all times, as modes may rotate in and out of availability.

Delta Force isn’t just a Battlefield-like title. The popular military-inspired free-to-play FPS has a lot to offer gamers, with Delta Force’s game modes providing a refreshing variety. There is certainly familiarity to be found for FPS fans, but there are some extras that you may not expect from a game you can get for nothing.

Here we’ll cover and detail the key aspects of those game modes. So whether you’re considering adding the title to your collection or just looking for a bit of clarity on which mode to pick, we’ve got you covered. Delta Force is a game with a lot of depth and features, but it’s these modes that provide the cornerstones for enjoyment.

Delta Force modes in brief

Attack and Defend

Think of Attack and Defend like a cross between Battlefield 6’s Breakthrough and classic Battlefield’s Rush. This mode pits one Attacking team against one Defending team in a linear fight over successive sectors. Once ‘A’ and ‘B’ fall, further sectors become available. The number of sectors depends on the map and whether the Attackers can overtake the existing ones.

This game mode is pure attack vs defence, hence the name, and features infantry and vehicles to add to the action. Steam-rolling the Defender team is possible, as is robustly deflecting the Attackers, meaning persistence and quality tactics prove out. The match ends when all sectors are taken, or the Attackers run out of reinforcements (the Defenders have unlimited reinforcements).

Victory Unite

A similar mode to Attack and Defend, except that each team has one of the players as the team Commander, overseeing operations. This Commander can pass orders to Squad Captains and mark out priority targets and threats. This mode plays out similarly to classic Attack and Defend, except with more direction and continuity than all-out chaos.

It is worth noting that this isn’t really the same as the Commander feature available in several Battlefield titles, but the theory is similar. One player on each side assumes ‘control’ and attempts to direct their team to victory.

King of the Hill

The name sort of speaks for itself, but if you’re looking for a Battlefield 6 vs Delta Force comparison, this mode isn’t as similar as you may think. In Delta Force’s game modes, King of the Hill operates like BF6’s Conquest. So here, each team fights for control of multiple points across the map.

The ultimate aim of this mode is to be the first team to 3,000 resource points. Those points are secured by capturing and holding the flags/points around the map. You can do that with infantry and vehicles, so there is certainly more scale to this mode than found in the infantry-only BF6 mode of the same name.

Blitz

Blitz is a shrunken version of King of the Hill, featuring infantry-only play across only three flags. As such, it’s a more rapid game mode for players who prefer more frenetic FPS action without vehicles to worry about. The victory requirements are similarly shrunken, with 500 resource points securing victory.

Hill of Iron

Hill of Iron is a King of the Hill mode featuring vehicles only, and was initially available in 2025 for mid-March and mid-June. At the time of writing, the mode is out of rotation and so unavailable for access. However, parts of the Delta Force community have been positive about its inclusion and have requested its return.

Battle Practice

A straightforward practice mode, where you can team with AI squad-mates to practice play, loadouts, weapons, operators, and get a feel for Delta Force. While this is ideal for new players, you could also use it as a mode for practising to perfection if you are looking to try a different class for a new season, or if you want to test out a weapon or become familiar with maps.

Operations

Operations is its own overarching mode in Delta Force, and not typical of FPS franchises like Battlefield or Call of Duty. It’s also the esports-facing mode used in the Delta Force Invitational. There are three options within operation, which we’ll cover here. Ultimately, Operations provides an extraction-shooter element akin to Escape From Tarkov.

Hazard Operation and Operation Blackout are ostensibly the same, with the latter being a nighttime version, increasing the challenge. However, both require you to deploy, secure, or complete a mission objective, optionally loot equipment from enemies or containers, and then successfully extract. Found loot can be stashed and used on subsequent missions.

The third option, Hot Zone, is a 3v3v3 mode where all-human players seek to win by eliminating the other two teams. This mode has three rounds per match and requires one team to win three rounds to claim victory. So prepare for some potentially epic battles in competitive matchups!

Black Hawk Down

Delta Force has a history with the Black Hawk Down story (covered by the 2001 film of the same name). This mode is a revisit to the story featured earlier in the DF series, and provides a campaign option across several missions. That’s not all, though, since you have further options here.

While you can absolutely play through the Black Hawk Down missions alone, you can also do it co-op with friends. Or, interestingly, you can select ‘Quick Match’ to jump into a random co-op session to play with other players. You can consider Black Hawk Down a bolt-on in some respects, though, since it’s an additional 28GB download on top of Delta Force itself.

Conclusion

You may be surprised at the number of options available in Delta Force’s game modes. There’s plenty of larger and smaller-scale multiplayer enjoyment to be found. And you can even ditch the team-based FPS and dip into extraction-shooter fun, or a single or co-op story mode.

It’s impressive for a free-to-play game to have this many modes and game experiences available, and we’ve had a lot of fun checking them out. Note that some modes may rotate in and out of availability, Hill of Iron being a good example. What’s missing? Perhaps a straight Team Deathmatch option, but who knows…maybe that will turn up in the future.

FAQs

How many game modes are there in Delta Force?

There are around 10 game modes in Delta Force, falling under ‘Warfare’, ‘Operations’, and ‘Black Hawk Down’. This number may change as modes rotate in and out of availability.

Which Delta Force game mode is the best?

The best Delta Force game mode will depend on your personal preferences when playing the game. Attack and Defend may be the most popular, but there is no one-size-fits-all mode.
