Lara Croft gets a new face – and this time for Prime Video
It was a long back and forth, but now it’s official: Amazon’s planned Tomb Raider series will start production in early 2026. This also seems to confirm the targeted series launch in 2027. The cult figure Lara Croft, who has already been portrayed on the big screen by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, is getting a whole new chapter this time – in series form. And the choice of lead actress is sure to electrify fans of “Game of Thrones” immediately: Sophie Turner is stepping into the role of the iconic treasure hunter.
The British actress, who is remembered by many as Sansa Stark, will now step into the action-packed shoes of the video game legend. Her involvement was announced a year ago, and now there is finally a concrete start date for production: The cameras are set to roll on January 19, 2026. This comes as a relief to many fans, after rumors had been circulating that the project had stalled or even been shelved.

But why did it take so long for “Tomb Raider” to really get going? The main person responsible for the development is “Fleabag” star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who has been under contract with Amazon since 2019.& nbsp; However, insiders report that there were difficulties in developing the script – two teams of writers are said to have failed previously. Now, with Chad Hodge, known for series such as “Wayward Pines,” the crucial partner seems to have finally been found. He will serve as showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge.
Amazon has also assembled a top-notch directing team: Jonathan Van Tulleken, most recently responsible for the acclaimed series “Shogun,” will take on the role of director. Not only does he bring experience with major historical material, but he was also involved in “Blade Runner 2099” – another prestigious project from Amazon. This means there is a good chance that the series version of Lara Croft will set new standards not only visually, but also narratively.
Fans can look forward to a reinterpretation that both picks up on the iconic elements of the games and surprises with fresh ideas. We’ll find out whether Sophie Turner is convincing as Lara Croft in 2027, when the adventurer begins her next big treasure hunt on Prime Video.
