TL;DR

  • Luna Snow is a Strategist support character in Marvel Rivals.
  • She was first introduced in Marvel in the Marvel Future Fight mobile game in 2018.
  • Luna’s real name is Seol Hee, and she was part of a K-pop girl group before she got her ice powers.
  • Luna is a superhero, K-pop star, and famous South Korean celebrity.
  • In Marvel Rivals, she can heal allies and damage enemies with her ice powers.

Luna Snow is a relatively new hero in the Marvel universe, introduced in the mobile game Marvel Future Fight back in 2018. It didn’t take long for Luna to gain popularity, becoming part of Marvel Comics the following year.

Luna became a launch hero for the 6v6 free-to-play hero shooter game Marvel Rivals, significantly raising her profile and gaining her more popularity as a hero in the Marvel world. We’re going to dive deeper into Luna Snow’s lore and her background to examine exactly who she is and what she can do in general, as well as her specific abilities in Marvel Rivals.

Who is Luna Snow?

Luna Snow is the stage name of South Korean pop star and superhero Seol Hee (or 설희 in Korean). Hee was part of a K-pop group when she had a run-in with a cold fusion reactor, leading to her gaining cryokinetic superpowers and earning the nickname Luna Snow.

Luna can not only control ice, but she can also switch between “dark ice” and “light ice” in Marvel Rivals. Dark ice damages her enemies, while light ice heals them. She also lives a double life of sorts, still performing as a K-pop artist while actively engaging in superhero duties.

Luna was made specifically for the Marvel Future Fight mobile game after Netmarble–the South Korean developers of the mobile title– requested a hero who was an “ice magician who could both heal and deal damage.” She was created by JeeHyung Lee and Min Kyun Kim from Netmarble alongside Bill Rosemann and Danny Koo from Marvel Games. Luna was then adapted to Marvel Comics by Gang Hyuk Lim and Greg Pak.

Luna Snow’s lore, explained

Seol Hee was born in South Korea and, at a young age, she lost both of her parents, leading her to be raised alone by her grandmother. Seol and her grandmother struggled financially, so she decided to use her singing, dancing and musical prowess to try and become a K-pop idol to make enough money for her grandmother to live comfortably.

Seol was successful in her journey to K-pop stardom. After training at the International Music School of the Gifted, she formed a four-member K-pop girl group called 4L1T. Her other band members were fellow K-pop trainees Jin Soo, Min Jee and Hae Won. It was here that Seol adopted Luna as her stage name.

4L1T were set to perform in their debut appearance at the Stark Arena in Seoul, but things took a turn when their manager bought tech unknowingly from a scientist called Jae Jwa Kwak, a.k.a. Joro Spider, at A.I.M. In the Marvel Universe, A.I.M. are a privately funded criminal organisation of scientists set on world domination. The tech was meant to boost the special effects of the concert, but instead, it allowed Kwak to get through the intensive Stark security and access the cold fusion energy reactor at the arena.

A.I.M. ambushes the concert to get to the reactor, and Seol bravely attempts to protect the attendants. She is overpowered by A.I.M. soldiers and locked into a technologically advanced storage freezer. When trying to get out, Seol is blasted with cold fusion energy, exposing her to significant cold temperatures and radiation. This is what gives Seol her cryokinetic abilities, and she uses her newfound skills to escape the freezer and stop the attack. Seol successfully protects the civilians at the arena and forces Joro Spider and the other A.I.M. forces to retreat.

Seol immediately becomes an overnight sensation, with the media dubbing her “Luna Snow” and celebrating her victory at Stark Arena. Not long after receiving her powers, Luna began working with the government in South Korea, becoming part of the government superhero team known as Tiger Division. Luna would also go on to become part of the well-known group Agents of Atlas, whose members include Shang-Chi, Brawn and Aero.

Luna Snow is an interesting character in Marvel Rivals and Marvel in general, as she combines the rising global popularity of K-pop with the superhero genre, offering something unique. In Marvel Rivals, she is a well-balanced healer. At first, she can be tricky to get to grips with, as she requires more precision than some of the other Strategists in the game, but she is easily one of the top-level supports. Here’s hoping that Luna will continue to be a popular Marvel character and perhaps get a live-action iteration in the MCU one day.
