TL;DR

  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has over 128 heroes that fit into one of six different roles
  • The main roles in MLBB are Tank, Fighter, Assassin, Mage, Marksman and Support
  • Heroes can often be flexed into different roles, as well as their primary role
  • The meta is constantly changing in MLBB, meaning that the best heroes are always changing
  • Some heroes have had a great presence, making them role-defining as we’ve outlined.

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang currently has 128 heroes and a roster that is constantly changing and growing. Heroes are being adjusted all the time with buffs and nerfs to attempt to balance out the game, meaning that hero tier lists are ever-changing.

Just because a Mobile Legends: Bang Bang hero might be present right now thanks to a recent buff, that doesn’t exactly mean it defines the role. Plenty of heroes have achieved iconic status among the community, whether it be because of their ability to solo carry games or because it feels like they have been around forever.

We’ve covered heroes we think have defined each role in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and explained exactly why we think these heroes are so beloved or iconic.

What are the roles in MLBB?

There are six different hero roles you can play in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang:

  • Tank: The tank soaks up damage and protects allies in the front line. Another key part of the tank role is initiating fights.
  • Fighter: The fighter often functions as a secondary frontliner, thanks to the versatility. You are a durable hero with high damage output.
  • Assassin: An assassin is a high mobility damage dealer that allows you to quickly get into a fight, eliminate a key target and then get back out.
  • Mage: Mages wield magic damage and can use spells to apply crowd control abilities to control the enemies or burst down enemies.
  • Marksman: Typically, the marksman is a primary source of damage, particularly in the late game. You’ll likely be a target for assassins.
  • Support: This role is composed of high utility heroes that can provide heals, shields and buffs, with their primary focus being protecting their carries.

While the majority of heroes can be classified as one role, some of them can be flexible and used in multiple roles.

Heroes that define each role

Tank: Tigreal

A determined warrior in ornate armor wields a glowing sword and shield amidst a fiery, smoke-filled battlefield, evoking bravery and intensity

Most known for his long-lasting chain crowd control, Tigreal is one of the most annoying tanks to play against and one of the best to have on your team. This hero can constantly slow you, stun you, knock you airborne or pull you in, back to back, with very short cooldowns thanks to his kit. He also has an insanely high base HP when reaching level 15, allowing him to soak up bucket loads of damage without feeling a thing, as well as tank turrets and ignore shots thanks to his passive.

Fighter: Chou

While Chou is a fighter, he is iconic thanks to his versatility. He can also be played in the tank role, making him a staple in so many matches. Chou can easily soak up a load of damage and output it straight back to dominate games without being shut down. He also has great mobility thanks to his charges and jumps, letting him initiate team fights and get right in the action.

Assassin: Hayabusa

A ninja-like warrior crouches dramatically with a sword on his back, wearing dark armor and a red scarf, set against a stormy night sky

Hayabusa is an iconic and strong assassin – typically played in the jungle role. He is a master of deception and speed, and best known for his flashy playstyle, making him a great pick for those who are hoping to solo-carry a game. So long as you’re willing to put in the hours to master the hero, Hayabusa has a pretty fantastic payoff, allowing you to stack up your passive for massive amounts of burst damage and dash in and out with your Ninjutsu: Quad Shadow skill.

Mage: Kagura

Kagura has had long-standing popularity and presence in both professional and general play. She is extremely versatile but has a high skill ceiling. However, once mastered, she can be deadly. Dominating the mid-lane, Kagura provides good utility thanks to her passive shield and ability to remove CC, as well as good crowd control to lock down the enemy with stuns and slows.

Marksman: Layla

A confident female character with blonde hair wields a large, glowing futuristic gun, set against a backdrop of a stormy sky and buildings
Layla is iconic thanks to her easy to master kit / Image credit: Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

Whether you’ve played in the marksman role or not, you’ve played the iconic hero, Layla. Arguably one of the easiest heroes in the game, Layla is the tutorial hero and often has higher pick rates when first starting out and in lower elo, thanks to how easy her kit is to master. Her passive allows you to stay far away from danger but still output high amounts of damage. Pair this with her long-range kiting kit, and you can deal massive amounts of burst without putting yourself at risk.

Support: Floryn

A fantasy scene depicts a woman with long pink hair sitting on a tree. She's reaching out to a glowing, ethereal creature. The atmosphere is magical and serene

After being given away for free as part of the MLBB fifth anniversary, Floryn has dominated games and, in turn, achieved a ban rate of over 80% at some points. Her ultimate provides her with global healing and buffs to her entire team, which cannot be stopped by anti-heal or other healing debuffs. Pair this with her decent damage output, and you have a high-performing support who not only takes care of her allies but also can hold her own.

Conclusion

All in all, there are plenty of heroes in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, but very few of them have actually achieved iconic status. Just because a hero is strong or your favourite right now, that won’t stop it from declining after some nerfs, but the above heroes have consistently performed or held a soft spot among the community.
