Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes Hands-On Preview –

Following Battlestar Galactica Deadlock in 2017, fans of the sci-fi media franchise were hoping for more ambitious strategy games. It’s taken a while, but Dotemu and Alt Shift may be ready to wow diehards and newcomers alike with Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes, a “story-rich tactical roguelite” with a stylized presentation to boot.

We’ve had the chance to play an early preview build of the game after its Gamescom announcement, and while the FTL: Faster Than Light influences are evident, Alt Shift has made sure to iterate on systems and mechanics from Crying Suns, its previous space strategy game. Below you’ll find our early impressions as well as everything we know so far about Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes ahead of its 2026 release.

Publisher Dotemu and developer Alt Shift haven’t locked a release date for Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes yet, but its Steam page promises we won’t have to wait too long now.

After a brief intro which tells the player the basics of the Cylon-humanity conflict in stylish and clean fashion, Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes doesn’t introduce overly complex systems and dense mechanics that only become clear as you fail and retry over and over again. Instead, it’s a narrative-oriented roguelite betting most of its chips on a refreshing simplicity of use while making sure there are enough variables and difficult decisions to shape (and reshape) entire runs.

For the most part, Scattered Hope’s loop consists of clicking through several menus and submenus as you try to make the most of insufficient resources, fuel, and operatives that are key to a scrappy fleet’s survival. The Cylon Fleet is always right behind you, so it’s safe to say conflict is inevitable even if you’re on the defensive and just trying to rejoin the legendary Battlestar Galactica.

Time management is of the essence here; you take ‘turns’ to complete trainings, quests, and special narrative events that always have an impact on your crew and resources one way or another. Eventually, you run out of time and the Cylons show up, so Scattered Hopes is essentially a management and maintenance game first and foremost. After all these turn-based phases jam-packed with narrative beats and all sorts of hiccups, there are actual RTS-tactical battles to take care of.

Skilled pilots can be assigned to certain ships and squadrons ahead of these encounters, improving their stats and sometimes even leading to special rewards, but you’re the one calling the shots once all hell breaks loose. The goal’s to defend the fleet (or what’s left of it), and you’re always on the backfoot. Thankfully, the human ships feel pretty strong and durable even before you look into tech upgrades, so well-planned positioning as the Cylon ships gradually enter the combat zone can allow them to destroy most attackers before they reach the main vessels. On top of those fighter squadrons, the capital ship can also launch targeted missiles and even nukes (which must be obtained through the optional opportunities that may or may not be available in a system) that destroy entire groups with a single, flashy blow.

At no point of any run I felt ‘lost’ or frustrated. Yes, failure’s part of the roguelite loop, but even with only the most basic fleet available and having just a few ‘meta’ upgrades (yes, you can improve your chances in following runs), my decision-making in the turn-based phases and my control of the low-poly units during assaults had tangible impacts. In fact, I got further on my first two tries than I’d anticipated after the scary tutorials.

Whereas many roguelites find it difficult to make the early runs engaging, Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes appears to strike a nice balance between fittingly ruthless and rewarding from the get-go. A lot could change between now and its planned Q1 2026 release, but I’m optimistic about this one’s survival chances.

Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes Gameplay

As explained in our hands-on preview, Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes mixes turn-based roguelite systems and mechanics with RTS battles with a ‘tactical pause’ option to carefully consider and plan every move.

There are several factions on board, each with interests that often clash, which leads to crises and narrative events which can improve or doom the chances of survival of the entire fleet. Unique characters with their own sets of stats and traits can help alleviate the burden of managing the ships and crew, and can also be used to make the most of resources and go into battle with improved stats and defensive capabilities. However, there aren’t many of these individuals to recruit over the course of a run, so not losing them is equally important too.

Upgrades and in-depth (but not daunting) ship and fleet management are also part of the equation; these elements directly affect how both the large vessels and fighter squadrons perform during the real-time defenses against the Cylon onslaught. When it’s 100% safe to jump to a new destination, you can recall your fighters (or lose them forever) and try to leave before the capital ship is destroyed.

Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes Price and Platforms

The price tag for Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes hasn’t been revealed yet, but if we consider its similarities to Crying Suns in size and scope, we can safely expect the final price to land anywhere between $20 and $30.

As for the platforms Dotemu and Alt Shift are targeting at the moment, only PC (Steam) has been confirmed. That said, Scattered Hopes isn’t a heavy or demanding video game, so most people with access to a non-ancient PC should be able to play it with no issues.
