The facilities are collaborative spaces designed to ‘unlock human potential in the digital era,’ and offers a range of programmes that will integrate esports with education and wellness.

In addition to the programmes, the Innovation and Research Centre (IRC) will enable greater cooperation across several regions and aims to open the door for investment opportunities that focus on responsible gaming habits and creating sustainable career pathways.

“The launch of our Innovation and Research Centre in Athens is a milestone in the GEF’s journey to shape an inclusive and impactful future for esports,” said Thanos Karagrounas, Chief Impact Officer at the GEF.

“By combining Socialinnov’s deep expertise in digital empowerment with the GEF’s international network, we will unlock new opportunities for innovation, education, and investment.”

Founded in 2013, Socialinnov aims to provide youth and communities with digital skills, enabling them to upskill and reskill to embark on careers within digital industries. In April 2025, it secured $100,000 (~£74,334) in a funding round.

Global Esports Federation in 2025

Over the past eight months, the Global Esports Federation has continued to operate various initiatives across the world. This year will see Peru host the Global Esports Games event to begin a multi-year deal between Lima, the country’s capital city and the governing body.

The event was initially set to take place in 2024, but was pushed back to this year, marking the start of the Global Esports Tour, which aims to grow esports in new regions.

In August, the Federation revealed that Los Angeles, California, will host the 2026 event, with the Los Angeles Times Media Group acting as the host partner.
