Marvel Rivals is now allowed to invent its own heroes, causing many frightened fans to take to the barricades.
Guangyun Chen, creative director of Marvel Rivals, announced in an interview with MP1st that the successful hero shooter has been given permission to create its own heroes and bring them into the game. However, fans are now afraid of losing what they love about Marvel Rivals in the first place.
It’s possible, but…
The announcement essentially means that new, original characters can be added to Marvel Rivals and treated like the heroes and villains known from the movies and comics.
Until now, the game has relied exclusively on licensed Marvel characters, although there were already some relatively unknown faces among them – even for comic book fans. These included Luna Snow and Jeff the Land Shark.
What does this mean for the future? That’s actually difficult to answer. When asked directly whether developers would be allowed to include their own characters, Guangyun Chen simply replied with a “yes.” We do not know whether there are any plans for this in the future or how long this permission has been in place.
p>No reason to panic (or rejoice) yet: This means that it is not yet certain whether there will actually be custom heroes and villains in Marvel Rivals. After all, this is only permission from the publisher, not a promise.
“I only play because it’s Marvel”
Fans are definitely pretty angry about the news and now fear losing the reason they play Marvel Rivals in the first place. For example, the Reddit user Bipower writes:I’m only playing because it’s Marvel.
Similar fatal words are found in the Reddit user Spaceholder: Well, das zerstört die Hälfte des Spielspaßes.
Der Reddit user Serawasneva even becomes almost philosophical in his emotional response: Why do developers always decide to do the exact opposite of what players want?
Positive responses are virtually impossible to find.
Overall, the mood can be summed up as frustrated concern. The community fears that Marvel Rivals will lose its identity and become like many other hero shooters that are actively avoided for good reason.
Custom characters would dilute the Marvel setting and could even result in less new Marvel content in the game overall. And that’s the reason why players are there in the first place.
