Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era’s release date marks a significant moment for the venerable turn-based series which, after a decade-long slumber, is finally getting a new mainline entry. Developed by Unfrozen, the studio behind Iratus: Lord of the Dead, and co-published by Ubisoft and Hooded Horse, the title is a prequel that aims to take things back to their origins.

Set in the realm of Enroth, itself located on the continent of Jadame, a place mentioned but never properly explored in the series, Olden Era’s non-linear single-player campaign plans on delivering a turn-based strategy adventure in which rival factions must pursue fragile alliances in order to overcome the demonic Hive and its Mastermind.

Gameplay-wise, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era leans into the series acclaimed turn-based strategy formula while polishing various aspects in order to make the prequel suitable for both veterans and newcomers, according to the publisher.

We’ll traverse the global map, collecting resources and increasing our heroes’ capabilities, all while upgrading our castle and deciding which kingdom laws best suit our objectives.

The turn-based battles take place on hex-based maps, where we order our units and use various active abilities to gain the upper hand.

Multiple difficulty levels then ensure that players of all skill levels can jump in and play Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era.

Based on what was shared so far, the prequel sounds like a complete package, although it’s unclear how much of it will be available when it initially launches into early access.

Aside from the aforementioned non-linear campaign, the title promises six playable factions, some new, others familiar to series veterans. They are as follows:

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Factions

  • Temple (Classic Humans),
  • Necropolis (Undead and Vampires),
  • Sylvan (The Forces of Nature and Fey Folks)
  • Dungeon (Underground Creatures and Dark Elves)
  • Hive (Demonic Insectoids)
  • Unannounced sixth faction

Over on the multiplayer side of things, we can expect three modes. Classic is the traditional Heroes of Might and Magic experience, where we control one or more heroes, upgrade our castle, and explore the map in search of riches, quests, and enemies to conquer.

The One-hero mode is described as a “blitz-like system” in which we only control one hero. When they die, it’s game over. Finally, Arena focuses on the turn-based battle side of things, allowing us to draft and upgrade a hero, pick troops for our army, and face off against opponents.

Each mode comes with its own dedicated matchmaking system, ratings, and leaderboards.

In addition, scenarios are also confirmed, as is a “pick-up-and-play” in-game editor that allows us to create new levels and share them with the rest of the community.

Paul Anthony Romero, Cris Velasco, alongside Mateusz Alberski and the Heroes Orchestra are responsible for the music that accompanies us as we ride through fantasy realms and battle foes.
