Balancing updates, bug fixes and much more

The Ripatorium

An endless mode where you fight hordes of demons in one of three selectable arenas. There are several settings you can use to customize your battle:

You can set a timer, choose the type of enemies, how often new demons spawn, and even select the soundtrack you prefer to listen to while tearing out entrails.

Skins

The new update brings two skins. But you’ll have to be quick for one of them, as it’s limited in time.

  • QuakeCon 2025 Skin: Register by September 1, 2025, to automatically receive the skin. It may take up to 48 hours for it to appear in your inventory.

Further changes

The second major update for The Dark Ages brings dozens of improvements. You can now use a slider to adjust how long the slow-motion scenes last.

The speed at which you switch weapons has been increased. You can now also cancel the animation if you want to block with your shield. Boss fights have been reworked, weapons have received buffs and nerfs, and much more. Check out the detailed patch notes on page 2 of this article for more information.

However, work on Doom: The Dark Ages is apparently not over yet: The Ripatorium is set to be expanded in the coming months. Do you have any other requests that you would like to see implemented in a future update? Or should the Doomslayer focus on a new adventure instead? Feel free to let us know in the comments!

Doom: The Dark Ages – Update 2 Patch Notes

FSR 4 is waiting for a major update – and AMD is now laying the foundation for “Redstone.”

With FSR 3.1.4, AMD is laying the foundation for “Redstone,” which is set to arrive later this year as a major upscaling update for current Radeon graphics cards.

At Computex 2025, AMD announced a new update for upscaling in FSR 4 (“FidelityFX Super Resolution”). The project, dubbed “Redstone,” is expected to improve implementation in three key areas, with a release date set for the second half of 2025.

The company has now laid the foundation for this, as explained in the GPUOpen developer blog. This step is reflected in the update to FSR 3.1.4, which is now available.

AMD Redstone: Four points for a hallelujah

The actual update to FSR 3.1.4 can be summarized quite quickly. Compared to its direct predecessor, only minor ghosting issues have been fixed.

However, things get exciting in the next sentence of the developer blog, because “FSR 3.1.4 also adds the necessary camera parameters to support ML frame generation” – i.e., part of the aforementioned Redstone feature set. Since game developers should be able to switch from FSR 3 to FSR 4 relatively easily, this is an important update.

Basically, Redstone wants to cause a stir with four different points:

  • Neural Radiance Caching: This technology uses a grid of AI-powered neural networks that continuously learn from game data and predict how light will spread in a scene.
  • ML Ray Regeneration: Aims to address one of the main problems with ray tracing: the high number of samples required for clean images. Instead of relying on conventional denoising algorithms, this AI-based solution reconstructs missing pixel information.
  • ML Frame Generation: While AMD still relied on vector-based frame generation in FSR 3, Redstone is introducing a fully AI-based solution—and that’s exactly what FSR 3.1.4. is based on.
  • ML Super Resolution: The same applies to the actual upscaler, where AMD uses an ML-enhanced AI model to produce better images, especially at low starting resolutions.

However, there is still a downside to Redstone, as the new features are only available on the RDNA 4 architecture. This means that only the Radeon RX 9070 (XT) and RX 9060 (XT) can benefit from the improved features. AMD seems to have scrapped plans to bring the new technologies to older generations.
