After a difficult run, Betfred Sportsbook is formally exiting the US online sports betting market.
On July 31, 2025, the business shut down its online presence in Pennsylvania, the final state in which it remained operational.
Betfred’s American online presence, which it entered in 2020 with lofty goals and a partnership at Wind Creek Bethlehem casino, is coming to an end with this withdrawal.
Due to growing losses and fierce competition from US sportsbooks like FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, and BetMGM, Betfred, which had previously operated in up to ten states, gradually closed both its retail and online sportsbooks.
Prior to the closure, Pennsylvania customers were informed that while they could settle or cash out their existing bets early until the end of July, no new online wagers would be accepted.
In order to guarantee that no winnings go unclaimed, Betfred will process payments to customers directly by check for any wagers that would pay out after the shutdown.
“All pending wagers, transaction history and early cash-out options will remain available to patrons until July 31. All existing wagers carrying a settlement date on or after July 31 will be sent via check if the bet results in a winning ticket,” Wind Creek Bethlehem has confirmed.
Why Betfred Left and What It Means for the Market
Betfred is the latest in a line of European betting companies that have left the US market after failing to establish a strong presence, including Betway and Tipico.
Due to the challenging American market, which is characterised by high marketing costs, stringent state-by-state laws, and strong domestic rivals, it is now practically impossible for smaller or foreign businesses to make a profit.
As a number of European organisations reassessed their US strategies, analysts pointed out that “holding a license in the US sports betting market does not guarantee profitability.”
Particularly in Pennsylvania, Betfred’s departure coincides with local lawmakers debating emerging trends like esports betting.
Legislation recently introduced by State Representative Ed Neilson to expand the definition of a sporting event may eventually include more digital gaming competitions, demonstrating how rapidly the market is changing despite the departure of well-known brands.
It is anticipated that Betfred will refocus its efforts on its core markets, such as the UK and other areas with lower operating costs and less intense competition.
