Brutal Legend, an action-adventure game inspired by the heavy metal genre, has been made free to play for 666 minutes in an Ozzy Osbourne tribute.

The heavy metal music legend passed away on July 23rd after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Brutal Legend developers, Double Fine, announced their Ozzy Osbourne tribute at midnight on July 24th. For 666 minutes only, the game was available for free download.

To honor Ozzy’s larger-than-life rock and roll legacy, we’re making Brütal Legend *FREE* on itch.io: doublefine.itch.io/brutal-legend But this incredible deal will only last for 666 minutes, as the prophecy foretold. So get yourself clicking, before it disappears like a demon in the night… 🤘 🖤

Famously, Ozzy Osbourne plays The Guardian of Metal in the game, a character who is an immortal keeper of secrets. In classic video game style, he is also a source of weapon upgrades. You can even hear Ozzy Osbourne’s contributions to the game’s soundtrack.

The cult classic game originally released in 2009. It features many music legends alongside the late Ozzy Osbourne, including Lemmy Kilmister and Rob Halford.

Jack Black also provides the voice for Eddie Riggs, your playable character, who is sucked into a brutal fantasy world where an electric guitar can be a weapon. Bringing in a School of Rock vibe, Brutal Legends practically lives and breathes the music genre it’s inspired by.

This is not the first time video games have made changes to respect the passing of legends. Earlier this year, EA Sports paid tribute to Diolo Jotta following his tragic passing. They ensured his EA FC cards were price-locked following his death.

Although less famous in the video game community, if there were any game to be appropriate for a heavy metal tribute, Brutal Legend is the right one for Ozzy Osbourne.

Tributes to the late singer extend across the entertainment industry

Respect for Ozzy Osbourne has extended across the entire entertainment industry. Alongside the perhaps less expected tribute from the gaming community, he has also received tributes from the likes of Kermit the Frog and fans of The Muppets.

To be grieved by music artists and puppets alike is a mark on how widely revered the British music legend was in pop culture.

I think it would be legendary if Blizzard added a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne in World of Warcraft of his NPC used from the commercial sitting on the Frozen Throne at the top of Icecrown Citadel, still shouting, « I AM THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS! »

Other communities have also called for respect to be paid to Ozzy Osbourne in-game. World of Warcraft fans have requested that Blizzard add an Ozzy Osbourne tribute to the game using his World of Warcraft NPC, which appeared in a commercial. So far, this suggestion has received resounding support.

Despite his tragic passing, Ozzy Osbourne will live on in both global memory and music-inspired video games.

666 minutes of free downloads is an appropriately metal tribute to a metal legend.
