Hardware experts give their assessment of the PS6, and the community is not exactly thrilled

24 or 32 GB – how much RAM should the PlayStation 6 have? Digital Foundry gives its assessment, which divides the community into two camps.

The PlayStation 5 is approaching its fifth birthday, and rumors and discussions about its successor are gradually emerging. Tech experts at Digital Foundry recently discussed the RAM configuration of the PS6 and the usefulness of certain capacities – the community itself, however, has a clear preference.

24 or 32 GB of RAM for the PlayStation 6?

When asked by a viewer whether the next generation of consoles could have “tons of RAM,” Digital Foundry initially responded optimistically. The PS6 will certainly have more RAM than its predecessor—the PS5 had 16 GB, the Pro version two additional GB—but the exact amount is unclear.

  • Alex Battaglia estimates that Sony will opt for 24 gigabytes of RAM for the PS6. Battaglia bases this assessment on the increasing demands of ray tracing and machine learning.
  • His colleague Oliver Mackenzie, however, considers a range between 24 and 32 GB to be realistic, although he believes 24 GB to be sufficient.

No agreement among fans

In the comments on YouTube clip reveal a divide in opinion as to which path Sony should actually take. Several users think doubling the memory from 16 to 32 GB, as in previous generation jumps, is justified.

  • The consoles would remain on the market longer; given the development of gaming PCs, 32 GB is in line with current standards.
  • Some voices point out that current high-end PCs also increasingly require 32 GB of RAM to optimally display modern games (especially those with ray tracing). (via “Bit-Z1”).

However, there are just as many doubts that Sony will actually go to 32 GB, as components are becoming increasingly expensive: “Price increases and potential tariffs – I have a feeling it will only be increased to 24 GB.” (via ““).

This also raises concerns that the PlayStation 6 will suffer a similar fate to the Xbox Series S (via “AnDre-fj5lb”), which is regularly criticized for its insufficient storage capacity. Prominent examples of this include Baldur’s Gate 3 and Black Myth:
Wukong, which were initially delayed on Xbox consoles due to enforced feature parity.

Digital Foundry also warns against exaggerated expectations. Memory upgrades beyond 32 GB would significantly increase production costs—up to three US dollars per gigabyte of GDDR7 memory. With millions of consoles over a period of six to eight years, these costs add up to a considerable factor.

At the same time, experts emphasize that significant improvements are possible despite moderate memory upgrades. Modern AI models for graphics often require less than one gigabyte of memory, so efficiency gains could become more important than pure hardware power.

Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has also regularly applied the brakes in recent months.
The jump from PS5 to PS6 will not be as dramatic as previous generation changes; instead of technical improvements, a different focus is simply needed for a successful launch.
Sony continues to work closely with AMD on the next generation of consoles to develop the next PlayStation generation:

  • For the PS6, According to the latest leaks from Kepler_L2, who is considered reliable, AMD plans to use its UDNA architecture, which is expected to offer around 20 percent more raster performance and double the ray tracing performance of the current RDNA generation.
  • The partnership with AMD, called “Project Amethyst,” focuses on machine learning and improved graphics capabilities—precisely those aspects for which the required RAM upgrade would be necessary.
  • 32 GB of RAM – or a completely different focus for the PlayStation 6? What would you like to see in the next generation of consoles? Let us know in the comments!
