After 15 years, Steam is getting a new video player, and people agree: “It was sorely needed.”

Valve is likely to give Steam a new video player soon, and users are unlikely to mourn the old one.

Steam has been around for over 20 years, and even though the platform has undergone a few redesigns, it has never been a quick process. The video player is also getting a bit long in the tooth and has never really worked very well. However, it has been around since 2010, when the last bit of olive green disappeared from the user interface.

New video player leaked

Valve itself is responsible for the “unplanned” release. The redesign of the player was briefly online and was discovered by users. Redditor Stannis_Loyalist shows a short clip in a post:

The new look is a much more contemporary overlay instead of the narrow bar with controls that the old player had. You can even finally adjust the video quality.

Reddit users show their enthusiasm

In the comments below the post, players are very happy with the new video player, but jokingly combine their praise with the minor issues of the old feature.

“Is it now seriously possible to rewind a video or switch to full screen without the video freezing completely?”, rejoices NikkuSakura. Cryoverspi11edMi1k is convinced: ”The update was sorely needed.”

“Are my eyes deceiving me? Is that actually a video player in Steam? It’s a miracle,” writes Blu_Jay-1st.

Please note that this is a leak and it is not 100 percent clear whether a new video player will actually be released or whether it will look like the one in the clip. There is also no information about when the redesign might be released.

However, it is supposed to be part of a major overhaul of the entire store . Several versions of the user interface tested by Valve have been circulating for several days on Reddit.

While some joke that Valve is taking forever to release the necessary update, the company is not sitting idle. At the beginning of the month, Steam got a new overlay with a handy performance monitor. One of the next areas for improvement could be the Steam app, which can significantly reduce your mobile data volume in a short period of time. Maybe Valve boss Gabe Newell will take a dive for that.
