Need for Speed Underground shines in new splendor thanks to an impressive RTX remix mod.

Although Need for Speed Unbound wasn’t a bad game in itself, EA’s popular arcade racing series is reportedly on the brink of extinction once again. Thanks to an “RTX Remix” mod, a more than 20-year-old series classic now at least looks better than ever before.

NfS Underground RTX Remix looks really good

Need for Speed Underground, released in 2003, was an important milestone for the series and is still considered one of the best installments. Street racing and tuning were extremely popular themes at the time, and Underground offered the perfect playground for them.

When Need for Speed fans are disappointed by the development of the series, there is often a call for a remake of Underground or one of its two even more popular successors.

While a solo developer has been working on an Unreal Engine 5 remake of NfS Underground 2 for some time, modder alessandro893 is tinkering with a

The RTX Remix Toolkit was created for exactly such projects. Modders can relatively easily create remakes of classics using modern technologies such as ray tracing or Nvidia DLSS 4 with the Transformer AI model.

For his mod, alessandro893 has already added over 1000 new light sources to the game world to improve the lighting. He has also created or redesigned more than 500 new textures, 30 high-resolution 3D models, and 26 original meshes.

The China Town environment has also been completely redesigned to showcase the strengths of the new technology more impressively.

The mod is still in beta, but it already looks pretty cool and can be downloaded via ModDB for free. The minimum requirements are an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3000, a Radeon RX 6000, and 6 GB VRAM. Let’s hope the modder finds enough time and motivation to complete the project.

How do you like the mod? Which Need for Speed game is your favorite?
