Let Them Trade, an upcoming city builder inspired by acclaimed multiplayer board game Catan, has received a new gameplay trailer which gives us a closer look at the mechanics behind its more relaxed approach to the genre.
Matches in Let Them Trade take place on a digital hex-based map whose tiles house resources that, through the proper buildings, we can exploit to grow our economy. We first take on the role of city planner, placing down structures and connecting cities by using roads.

Each city manages resource collection, trading, and citizen needs on its own, but we have to upgrade their resource processing buildings and channel our inner trader while paying attention to shifting trends.
The taxes collected from each trade help us research new, more specialized buildings which, in turn, allow us to expand our cities and influence across the map.
Let Them Trade’s gameplay trailer also highlights the castle, which acts as a hub where we can stock resources for later use. Random events can require specific resources, but having a place to store goods purchased for a lower price until their value increases can’t possibly hurt.
Success does, however, come at a price, as bandits will inevitably catch wind of how rich we’re steadily becoming, proving quite eager to pillage trader caravans.
It’s good, then, that Let Them Trade’s gameplay trailer also reveals the dual purpose of knights. These units both help us explore the map, uncovering new resources in the process, and protect trade routes alongside their retinue.
