Internet personality and streamer Tyler ‘Tyler1‘ Steinkamp has announced his own Street Fighter 6 (SF6) esports tournament, featuring a total prize pool of $10,000 (~£7,302.65).
Announced during a Twitch stream two days ago, the tournament will take place on July 6 at 2pm CST (8pm BST), with Tyler1 actively competing alongside other notable SF6 players.
The tournament will include the likes of Twisted Minds FGC player Noah ‘NoahTheProdigy‘ Solis, FlyQuest’s Victor ‘Punkdagod‘ Woodley, Weibo Gaming’s Tyler ‘Diaphone‘ Kusich and 100Thieves’ Sean ‘Shine‘ Simpson, among others.
Moreover, James Chen and Steven ‘Tasty Steve‘ Scott will be joining as commentators.
A Modern-only Tournament
Tyler1 also announced that the SF6 tournament will be Modern-only, which generally features simplified combos and is used by newer players who are getting into the FGC titles.
Initially, Tyler1 wanted to create a winner-takes-all tournament, but the players requested to change the prizepool distribution as Punkdagod was considered the big favorite to win everything.
“Everyone thinks punkdagod is going to win, so no one even wanted to play,” said Tyler1 on stream, stating that some players would have dropped out if he hadn’t given a share of the prizepool to other top finishers.
In the end, Tyler1 changed the prizepool distribution, giving $5,000 (~£3,649) to the winner, $3,000 (~£2,189) to the runner-up, and $2,000 (~£1,459) for third place.
The Modern-only format has caused some discussions within the FGC community, largely due to the fact that the players competing in the event are seasoned professionals.
“It’s good exposure for SF6 and the FGC, but it is also just a little weird to do a Modern invitational with a bunch of players who aren’t known for playing Modern,” said a user on Reddit. I think it would be cooler if they had some notable Modern warriors in it.”
Tyler1 is one of the most famous and polarising personalities in the streaming space today. Widely known for being a high-elo League of Legends player maining Draven, he gained notoriety for his aggressive personality on stream.
Throughout the years, he has often been involved in streamer tournaments, with the latest one being the AT&T Annihilator Cup. This event featured some of the top influential personalities in the gaming space, such as Ludwig ‘Ludwig‘ Ahgren, former LoL pro Peng ‘Doublelift‘ Yiliang and VALORANT pro Tyson ‘TenZ‘ Ngo.
