Xbox layoffs and game cancellations, such as Rare’s Everwild and an MMORPG from the studio behind Elder Scrolls Online, have been swarming the web following a number of companies’ annual financial reports.
Dying Light developer Techland has published record losses for 2024 as reported by Pulz Biznesu (Thanks GameKult) the 135million zl (£27.4million / $37.3million) deficit follows losses of 90million zl (£18.3million / $25million) in 2023.
While this looks dire at first, it should be noted that Techland hasn’t released a game since 2022’s Dying Light 2: Stay Human, which was a record year for the company in terms of profits. Techland earned 747 million zł (£151.6 million / $206.5 million) in the year the game was released. A new spin-off standalone release, originally envisioned as DLC for Dying Light 2, called Dying Light: The Beast is scheduled to be released in August 2025.
Despite the upcoming launch of what is expected to be a successful game, Techland has decided to cancel two of its projects. The press release did not go into details about which games were cancelled; however, it is assumed that the new fantasy RPG IP the team revealed in May 2022 is one of the projects.
In a post titled We Are Working On A Brand New Game, which described the title as a “AAA Open World Action-RPG in a fantasy setting”, Techland CEO Paweł Marchewka wrote “Our ambition is to introduce a brand new IP that is vastly different from what we have been doing for the past several years. We want to create a fully next-gen experience. A new fantasy epic set in a sprawling open world, fueled by the skills and experience we have gained as a team over the years, infused with new ideas, passion, and creativity.”
Despite these abandoned projects, Techland revealed that an unannounced project has been launched to replace the two cancellations. Techland has not stated if the company will undergo layoffs, and details about the new project are not expected to be shared.
We have contacted Techland for comment and will update our report once we receive further information.
