COD WW2

A new version of CoD: WW2 has been released in the Microsoft Store and Game Pass. This has now apparently been misappropriated by a hacker.

On July 1, 2025 Call of Duty: WW2 was released in the Microsoft Store and in the PC Game Pass. What was supposed to enable numerous players to play the first-person shooter, which was originally released in 2017, for the first time or again, turned into a fatal security disaster.

A hacker gained access to various PCs through the game and scared the owners. As a result, the game was removed from the store a short time later.

A dangerous troll causes fear and terror

Within a few days of the Game Pass release, there was an increase in messages from players who had been hacked These included pop-ups, sudden PC shutdowns and even pornographic content. However, the most common was a threatening in-game message: Error: You are being hacked by adrian5909, your PC is now mine.

In one particularly curious incident, a user received a pop-up advising them to contact lawyer Mitchell Silberberg. This then appears a few seconds later as a screensaver on the PC. The incident was captured on video and published by user Wrioh on X.

Since July 5, 2025, CoD: WW2 can no longer be downloaded via the Microsoft Store for PC. Activision is currently working on a solution to the problem.

How can something like this happen? The cause of the security vulnerability is partly the server switch to P2P (peer-to-peer), where players become the host of the lobby and thus take on the role of the server. This makes them more susceptible to RCE exploits.

What are RCE exploits and why are they a problem RCE stands for Remote Code Execution and means something like remote code execution. In an RCE exploit, hackers gain unauthorized access to the host’s PC..

Fatal consequences: If they succeed, they gain full control and can make changes to the system, install malware, steal data, activate the microphone or webcam or lock the system.

Not only WW2 could cause problems: Not only WW2 is at risk, but also other older CoD games that rely on P2P. These include MW2, MW3, Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, BO3 and Modern Warfare Remastered.

Steam is not affected: The Steam version of WW2 relies on dedicated servers and not on P2P, which is why there is no increased risk of hacks here.

In this case, the players have fortunately apparently only fallen victim to a troll who has not caused any major damage. But that is not certain. People could also have hacked in and stolen data that has not yet been discovered. It therefore makes sense that Activision acted immediately and took the game offline in the Microsoft Store for the time being.
