Fortnite Demon Rush game mode, explained

The K-Pop Demon Hunters Fortnite collaboration has officially dropped, and one of the main features of the collab is the new Demon Rush game mode. At the time of writing, Demon Rush currently has more than 115,000 active players, so it’s safe to say that it’s attracting a fair amount of attention. 

If you’re thinking of jumping into a game of Demon Rush to try it out for yourself, then read on, as we’re going to dive into everything you need to know. 

Demon Rush is a new, limited-time game mode in Fortnite. It is a reimagining of the Horde Rush game mode, wherein players face off against waves of monsters. Demon Rush changes the horde monsters to the faceless demon creatures from the K-Pop Demon Hunters animated film. Players have access to the four K-Pop Demon Hunter-themed Mythic items that are part of the Fortnite collaboration in Demon Rush. These items are:

These items can only be used if found during the battle or bought via the vending machines (more on them later). 

The three main characters from K-Pop Demon Hunters – Rumi, Mira and Zoey – also make an appearance in Demon Rush. They can be recruited for free to fight alongside the players, though only one of the girls can be recruited by each player at a time.

Demon Rush can be played alone or with a team of up to four other players (though you’ll have a tough time going solo). Once you jump into a game, you’ll get a small amount of time to prepare yourself before the demons arrive. During this time, you’ll have to stay within the safe area and thoroughly search for weapons and consumables. There are some chests scattered here and there, but there are also items sitting out in the open. When the timer hits zero, the demons will begin to descend on your location. 

As you progress through waves, more and more demons will appear, as well as mini bosses that are significantly tougher. You’ll also switch between staying in one location and moving with the storm circle. Moving when the storm circle is also moving can be particularly tricky, as you’ll have to focus on killing demons while ensuring you don’t get caught outside of the safe zone. 

Monster Parts are a unique element of Demon Rush. Demons drop Monster Parts when they are eliminated, and these parts can then be used to craft or upgrade weapons. These parts are bright pink shards, so they are easy to spot on the battlefield. 

To upgrade a weapon with Monster Parts, approach the upgrade bench and press the button on the screen. You will then see how many Monster Parts are needed to upgrade the weapon you currently have equipped. Each upgrade increases the tier of your weapon. For example, upgrading a green uncommon weapon will turn it into a blue rare weapon.

New weapons can also be purchased for Monster Parts at the Monster Part Vending Machine. These machines – and the aforementioned upgrade bench – will appear between waves of demons, so make sure to collect plenty of parts during a fight so you can upgrade or buy new weapons. 

Between waves, players have the chance to apply special upgrades. These perks can range from health buffs to shield upgrades, ammo perks, and more. Some are themed specifically around K-Pop Demon Hunters, such as a Mira-themed perk that encourages melee attacks (because Mira loves to punch things). There are two perks to choose between with each upgrade, and players can reroll their choice of perks once for free. Another reroll after this will cost Monster Shards.

As you progress, the fights will get more and more difficult. There is the chance to collect better weapons and upgrade your current weapons to much higher tiers, though, which gives you a fighting chance against the demons and bosses. 

The best way to survive a game of Demon Rush to the very end is to work proactively with your teammates, manage your resources effectively and be mindful when choosing your perks between rounds. Recruit the HUNTR/X members whenever possible, as it’s always useful to have another player on your team, even if they are an NPC. 

Another tip is to be vigilant regarding what loot you pick up between rounds and during a wave. Things can get hectic quickly if the demons start to pile up, making it hard to focus and easy to panic and just pick up whatever is closest to you at the time. Try to maintain a good distance between yourself and the demons (unless you are going full melee mode) and be aware of your surroundings. 

Check items before you pick them up if you can. Some situations make this almost impossible, especially if you get surrounded, but make an effort to do so to avoid grabbing unnecessary or unwanted loot. This could also lead to accidentally swapping out a favoured item for something else, which can quickly lead to your elimination. Be wary, communicate with your team when you can and opt for perks that suit your playstyle, and you’ll have a good chance at surviving through a game of Demon Rush. 

A new Hunter Rank system has also been implemented with Demon Rush, allowing players to rank up to make things easier when they jump into a Demon Rush game. By playing Demon Rush games, players earn XP and rise through the ranks to unlock certain perks. For example, reaching level two increases the player’s chance of getting a critical hit on demons, while getting to level three increases starting shields and health. By increasing your hunter rank, you’ll stand a better chance of making it through an entire game of Demon Rush in one piece. 

Players can earn experience points by completing certain quests related to Demon Rush. Doing so can unlock a few cosmetic rewards for free. These cosmetics are as follows:

It can be a tricky game mode to master, especially when it comes to making it all the way through the various demon waves and bosses. If you are finding it hard to progress, try not to fixate too hard on actually getting to the end. Instead, consider each match as a chance to improve your skills and get your hunter rank up. The higher your rank, the more upgrades you will get when you enter a game, leading to a better chance of success. All in all, Demon Rush is a super fun take on Horde Rush that is sure to appeal to Fortnite players of all kinds as well as die-hard K-Pop Demon Hunter fans.
