“I want an award for this” – Kojima wants to scan a real ghost for his new horror game and also thinks his studio is haunted.

The legendary developer has spoken about the trailer for his new horror game OD and revealed his paranormal plans.

The time leading up to the release is almost as entertaining as Hideo Kojima’s actual games. Part of the fascination with the legendary developer is that you never know exactly what he means and how serious he is about it all.

This is once again the case. After the first real trailer for his new horror game OD was presented to the world on September 23, his studio Kojima Productions celebrated in a big livestream celebrated its tenth anniversary. Here, the developer spoke with Phil Spencer from Microsoft about the trailer for OD and made a few… surprising announcements.

At least according to the English translator, Kojima wants to scan a real ghost for OD and even believes that there was a ghost in his studio.

Kojima goes ghost hunting

OD will be a graphically complex project, featuring many well-known actors and actresses, as is usual for Kojima – albeit with slightly less famous faces than in Death Stranding. Above all, however, it seems to be about ghosts and appears to be just as eerie as the legendary P.T., Kojima’s playable horror teaser.

To make the ghosts in the game as believable as possible, Kojima wants to scan a real ghost and is hoping to win a trophy for it:

For OD, I want to visit scary places all over the world. I want to scan a ghost for the first time. And I want an award for it. The place we scanned [for the trailer] is supposed to be haunted. But can you hear that crackling? That was recorded in our studio. Sometimes there’s a squeaking noise in the studio. Maybe the ghost was there, but not anymore.

Of course, this proximity to ghosts should not affect the quality of the game. That’s why Kojima kindly makes sure that the game itself is not possessed or at least works flawlessly. How? By visiting a shrine, of course:

That’s why we went to the shrine together with Microsoft to make sure we have a secure build of the game. And we’ll probably hire…

Kojima doesn’t finish the sentence about who he wants to hire. So whether he’s thinking of ghost hunters or exorcists remains to be seen. Instead, he answered the question of how well development is progressing: Well, but he can’t say for sure because, according to Kojima, they are developing in an unprecedented way. Here, too, he doesn’t reveal his cards.

How serious is he?

Hideo Kojima is certainly aware of how much attention he generates in the media with his often unconventional statements, trailers, and ideas. To a certain extent, such things are part of the game and are primarily there to keep people talking. Many people simply love the eccentric nature of the legendary developer.

How serious is Kojima actually about this whole ghost scanning thing? It’s hard to say. Based on his reactions in the stream, it’s difficult to tell (also due to the language barrier) whether he really believes what he’s saying. For the sake of completeness, we would like to add as a reputable media outlet: Factually speaking, there is no evidence that ghosts exist.

So we doubt that there will be a real ghost scan in OD. But maybe there will be something that at least Kojima considers to be a ghost.
