In Battlefield 6, we can now see a weapon attachment for the first time that is often highly controversial in shooters.

A new leak shows the thermal scopes familiar from the series and other shooters, and as always, they are not only causing excitement.

A new day, a new leak. This time, it has been confirmed that a weapon attachment found in many games of this genre will once again be part of the possible equipment in Battlefield 6. We are referring to thermal scopes, i.e., targeting devices equipped with a thermal imaging camera.

Usually, these sights highlight other players visually with a white or yellow to red glowing silhouette. This makes it easy to spot and take out opponents, of course, which is why players need to have useful countermeasures in a shooter game.

Leak about thermal scopes

On Reddit, a user has posted a video showing a sniper rifle and an assault rifle, both equipped with thermal scopes. Please note that these are being played against bots, which means that the attachments may appear to be slightly more effective than they actually are.

Why is this weapon attachment controversial?

Since thermal scopes allow players to spot others faster and better, they are naturally a huge advantage in a shooter game and can become a must-have without appropriate countermeasures.

For example, under the post, wickeddimension:  “They’re completely ruining sniping in [Battlefield] 2042 because you’re basically forced to choose them. There are no disadvantages to using them, and they light up people who are hiding as bright as a Christmas tree.”

Are there no countermeasures in Battlefield?

Yes, both in 2042 and according to the post author’s description in the new Battlefield, smoke grenades reduce the effect of thermal scopes. One disadvantage of the scopes is that they generally have a slower aiming speed.

Reddit user GideonAzanble suspects that the thermals in BF6 will consume many of the loadout points that players have, of which they only have 100 to equip their weapon with attachments. This would make a weapon with a good sight worse in other areas. It remains to be seen how the Thermal Scopes will perform in Battlefield 6. Players are not fundamentally opposed to this weapon attachment, but they are concerned that without good counters, everyone will have to use one. In BF4, it was possible to blind the Thermals with lasers and flashlights. So there are many ways to ensure a good balance.
