TL;DR

  • Fortnite is developed by Epic Games and came out on July 25, 2017, for consoles and PC.
  • Over 650 million registered players are in Fortnite at the time of writing, as well as 110 million active players every month.
  • Some of the first OG Fortnite skins were made available in October 2017, with the debut of Fortnite’s Shop.
  • There are roughly 2,300 skins available since Fortnite’s 2017 release.

Fortnite and skins go hand in hand, ever since the debut of its Item Shop in October 2017. Developed by Epic Games, the battle-royale behemoth has earned much of its revenue by offering players a way to dress their characters as superheroes, music artists, and more. You can collect some of them for free, while others are locked behind the item shop or the paid Battle Pass, where you have to level up in order to claim them.

However, with over 2,000 Fortnite skins being made available since the game’s 2017 debut, there have been plenty that simply didn’t land with its players, despite their huge success. With this in mind, we’re listing 10 of the worst skins Fortnite has ever released.

What makes a good Fortnite skin?

A good Fortnite skin usually depends on the brand it’s attributed to, and how much of a faithful recreation it is. There’s also the factor of how well it fits into Fortnite, both from a cosmetics and a branding perspective. The Power Rangers are a great example of this, currently available as part of Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4, called Shock N’ Awesome. Players have been equipping skins to become their favourite Power Rangers, with some videos going viral on the social media site TikTok, with a team of six appearing as them and winning various matches.

It’s factors like these that can make a skin good and memorable for players, which can result in them staying in Fortnite for the foreseeable future. However, it could be argued that the above attributes, when turned on their head, apply to the worst skins. Those that don’t feel like a natural fit in the game, nor is it a faithful recreation of what players recognise, which can cheapen the appeal.

10 worst Fortnite skins

10. Tron

Having skins from Disney’s Tron Legacy movie, released in 2015, seemed baffling at the time, and it seems baffling now. Released in 2021 as part of Chapter 2, Season 5, each of the 10 characters looked nearly identical, with the same costumes and ultimately feeling dull. Although an Identity Disk could be used as a pickaxe, as well as a light cycle for a glider, it all felt like a missed opportunity.

9. Lil Whip

Although Lil Whip was one of the rare Fortnite Skins you could buy through the Item Shop from 2019, players would usually regret doing so. With a cone as its body and an ice cream for a head, complete with a creepy facial expression, Lil Whip felt more distracting than anything else, mostly thanks to its head. It seems like Epic Games wanted this character to go viral, but utterly failed in doing so.

8. Neymar Jr

Having footballers in Fortnite seems like a logical collaboration, but most of them simply haven’t landed, with Neymar Jr being a great example. Released in April 2021 as part of Neymar Jr Quests in the battle pass at the time, players could equip this skin, or a strange ‘Jaguar’ appearance that looks more like a Power Rangers villain. Very odd choice, and one that players don’t equip their avatar with.

7. Cuddle Team Leader

A legendary skin that debuted in February 2018 and can still be purchased in the Item Shop, the Cuddly Team Leader is a creepy skin. A pink teddy bear with piercing purple eyes, it looks and feels out of place in today’s version of Fortnite. An outdated character that’s best left in the past.

6. Hollow Head

Sometimes, a skin can look good initially, but when you delve into it, it becomes underwhelming and leaves you wondering if there was any point in the skin being made available. Hollow Head is a great example of this, debuting in October 2018, which essentially consists of a Pumpkin head attached to a human dressed in army attire. It looks and feels unoriginal and is an example of where Fortnite missed the mark.

5. Trog

Appearing in December 2018 as part of a Mountain Myths set, Trog made an impression for all the wrong reasons. Looking like a goofy Yeti, it’s always been regarded as one of the worst skins, and for good reason. Failing as a joke, failing as a fun character to play as in Fortnite, Trog simply didn’t land, becoming a forgettable outfit for all involved.

4. Grimbles

Like Trog, this was another skin that made players wonder why it existed. An oversized Christmas Gnome that appeared in December 2018 as a purchasable skin, Grimbles simply looks creepy, and its alternative look, which merely replaced the Gnome’s eyes with red ones, only ramped up the ugliness of the character. It’s another skin that players prefer be lost to time.

3. Moisty Merman

Even before we explain the appearance of this skin, the Moisty Merman skin simply sounds wrong. Regarded as one of the ugliest skins released in Fortnite, it debuted in 2018 as part of Season 2, where alternative colours could be unlocked. Looking like a goofy Godzilla monster, this was again a skin that seemed like it would fit as a Power Rangers villain. The awkward design is not one you see being used by players in 2025, especially when there have been plenty of collabs with far better skins released.

2. Peely Bone

Once you see Peely Bone, you almost wish you didn’t. Debuting in November 2019 as part of a Peely Party bundle, the avatar is split between being a banana and the other being a skeleton. It’s an unsettling design that unsettled players more than it amused, and if there was an attempted joke, nobody could see it.

1. Derby Dominator

Topping the list is another footballer’s skin, but for various reasons. Players on sites like Reddit and Fortnite.gg rate this as one of the lowest, mostly because of how boring and low-effort it seems. Arriving in January 2021, the skin didn’t land with players due to an uninspired design that was generic and forgettable.

Conclusion

All Fortnite Skins currently available won’t appeal to everyone. Many have their own interests. Some may be excited to collect skins based on the band Gorillaz instead of the Power Rangers, and dress their avatar as them for the future.

But it’s mostly down to how players relate to these skins. From the rarest Fortnite skins to the most common, many won’t mind how much the grind is to level up in order to attain them, as long as they get them before they’re made unavailable for a period of time. But when it comes to the worst Fortnite skins, many simply wait for them to disappear, in the hope that something better takes their place.

With The Simpsons rumoured as the next batch of new Fortnite skins coming later this year, time will tell if they become some of the best or worst.
