The Toyland map from the first-person shooter title FragPunk has caught the attention of Counter-Strike 2 fans thanks to its familiar layout.
Released on August 21st, 2025, the layout of Toyland is an exact replica of Inferno, a map that has been featured in Valve‘s first-person shooter title since 2001.
Toyland features all of the elements found on Inferno, including identical box placements and spots where players can boost to higher locations for an alternative angle on the map’s chokepoints. Alongside the matching layout, Toyland also uses the same callouts, confirming similarities between the two battlegrounds.
The release of the map has gained criticism from the Counter-Strike community, with some believing FragPunk developer NetEase Games has infringed on Valve’s intellectual property.
“I hope Valve considers taking legal action, cause the fact that they’re taking down community’s 100% free passion projects but allowing a huge Chinese publisher to steal their map layout is insane,” said content creator Gabe Follower on social media.
While some fans are frustrated about Toyland copying Inferno’s layout, others see its addition to FragPunk as a tribute to one of Counter-Strike’s longest-standing maps. “I think this is fine as an homage. In CS:GO’s workshop, there were fan-made recreations of Call of Duty maps,” added another fan.
Other Esports Titles Copying Maps from CS2
Other esports titles copying maps from the Counter-Strike franchise isn’t a new occurrence. For several years, CrossFire has replicated layouts from the Active Duty map pool and implemented them into its own esports scene.
In 2014, CrossFire released its 2.0 update, which saw the arrival of Desert 2.0, a map that shares exactly the same layout as Dust II, a map that was first released in 2001 as a sequel to the popular Dust map.
While other titles often slip through the net when using Counter-Strike map layouts, Valve often takes action when dealing with third-party mods that also pay tribute to the title. In May, the developer and publisher cancelled the release of Classic Offensive, a mod that aimed to reconstruct the original iteration of Counter-Strike for the current audience.
