One of the world’s biggest shooters will leave PS4 and Xbox One behind in just a few months

For over eight years, hundreds of thousands of people have been playing the multiplayer shooter PUBG every day. Now the developers have announced that they will be discontinuing support for the previous generation of consoles.

Question: Which title holds the Steam record for the most players online at the same time? Well, after reading the introduction, the answer is pretty easy. Of course, it’s PUBG, formerly PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, one of the most successful shooters of all time.

When it was released in 2017, Steam alone had over 3 million players on its servers at times, and even today, the number of players there is still in the mid six-figure range. However, PUBG is now saying goodbye to some of its fans. Support for PS4 and Xbox One will be discontinued this fall.

Modernization has its price

The developers announced this news on their website and presented their schedule.nbsp; On November 13, 2025 , a new update will be released, ending support for PS4 and Xbox One. From that point on, the shooter will only be available on current-generation consoles and can no longer be purchased or played on PS4 and Xbox One.

The accounts and purchases of all affected players will of course remain intact. You will then need to log in on a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S to continue playing. Refunds for purchased items are not ruled out. According to the developers, these will be handled in accordance with the rules of the respective platform.

The developers cite necessary modernization in line with the current console generation as the reason for the switch to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The new version is said to be more stable and deliver improved graphics and more reliable frame rates. It should also make it easier to deliver larger updates.

It is unclear how many players will be affected by the end of support for PS4 and Xbox One, as, unlike Steam, there are no publicly available figures. The majority of players are likely to play on PC.

Overall, however, the proportion of players who continue to play on last-generation consoles remains significant. According to official figures from Sony, the PS4 had just as many monthly users as the PS5 in 2024. Although the newer console now leads in terms of player numbers, it can be assumed that some players will continue to play PUBG on PS4 or Xbox One. They now have just under three months to buy a new console or give up the shooter.
