Why Vtubers are Scared of YouTube’s New ID System

YouTube is rolling out a new ID system for creators to verify their age, but vtubers big and small are already protesting the change.

On July 31, 2025, vtubers have rallied against YouTube over fears of being doxxed by rabid fans. Major vtuber Bao the Whale is one of the most prominent voices, and she claims that providing legal identification will result in massive problems if accounts are hacked. Many vtubers oppose requiring ID for privacy purposes. They believe that anyone who accesses their account could learn their legal identity and potentially doxx them, or worse.

The complaints stem from YouTube’s new AI age verification system. On July 29, the company officially rolled out a new AI-powered system that will use a variety of unknown factors to determine a user’s age. If they are determined to be under 18, the website will automatically block certain types of content and features. If YouTube determines a user is underage, the only way to regain access is to prove their age by providing legal identification. Of course, in that process, a user will effectively hand over their full legal name, address, and other personal information to Google.

Why do vtubers oppose YouTube’s new ID system?

In the case of vtubers, the new ID system could ruin their careers. Many virtual YouTubers highly value their anonymity. Even just pictures of the faces being revealed has a massive impact on their careers. Vtubers also have to deal with extreme fans, who may sometimes stalk or harass their favorite streamers. If a deranged fan were to hack into their account and gain access to their ID, it could lead to identifying the vtuber.

Other independent vtubers, including Kasumi Okami and cakejumper echoed Bao’s concerns. Other fans noted that high-profile data leaks are possible even with a company like Google. If a hacker exposed the ID system, it could lead to blackmail, harassment, or stalking not just for vtubers, but for anyone who has verified their identity on YouTube.

The video hosting service has not responded to these complaints. However, the company could come up with an alternate solution that doesn’t involve handing over private government documents.
