Broken Mirror Games – Bloober Team’s publishing arm – today unveiled the first gameplay trailer for its debut project, the upcoming isometric survival horror title I Hate This Place, showcasing its comic-book inspired art style while giving us a few glimpses at the monsters protagonist Elena encounters.

Developed by Rock Square Thunder, I Hate This Place is inspired by the Eisner Award-nominated comic book series created by writer Kyle Starks and artist Artyom Topilin, being described as a “craft-focused” entry in the subgenre.

It follows protagonist Elena who finds herself in a bit of a pickle, facing large numbers of horrific opponents after she and her friend summon a malevolent force.

With the odds clearly against her, Elena needs to scavenge for valuable resources as she explores Rutherford Ranch, a journey that takes her “from haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers.”

These resources are not just used to craft gear that’s necessary for survival, but also to upgrade her campsite and rebuild outposts that provide protection.

This is all done during the day, since, when night falls, Elena has to deal with a higher number of stronger, more aggressive foes. Her flashlight also provides less aid when navigating her surroundings, which is why finding shelter and waiting until morning may not always be the worst idea.

Sound also plays a big role in I Hate This Place’s gameplay, since some creatures can determine our position just by the noise we make. Thus, brute-forcing our way through encounters isn’t always the wise choice.

Instead, using noise to draw foes to spots laden with traps that are ready to trigger can turn a tricky encounter into one that’s easier to conquer.

This may all sound like a lot of doom and gloom – and Elena does find herself swimming in an ocean of danger – but I Hate This Place’s art style revels in color, embracing its comic book roots.

I Hate This Place is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch in Q4 2025. You’ll find its first gameplay trailer embedded below.
