When horror suddenly takes shape again
It was perhaps the darkest surprise of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con: horror icon Jason Voorhees is back—and in two forms. Both on the big screen and as a video game character. Goosebumps guaranteed.
For fans of the slasher genre, this sounds like a belated Christmas present. For years, the Friday the 13th franchise has been in legal limbo. Licensing disputes between screenwriter Victor Miller and producer Sean S. Cunningham made new content impossible. But now the ice seems to have been broken.
The details remain a mystery, but the atmosphere is clearly brutal, dark, and nostalgic.

The hype is huge. And for good reason. Slasher films are currently enjoying a real comeback. Series such as “Chucky,” reboots of ‘Scream’ and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” show that there is a growing appetite for classic horror icons – especially among younger audiences who consciously choose retro horror.
Friday the 13th, the game – and a new movie on the horizon
Things got really concrete during a conversation with Robbie Barsamian, vice president of Horror Inc. Although he remained vague on the subject of games, one thing is certain: A new video game based on Friday the 13th is officially in the works – complete with a film accompaniment.
Both are set to be released at the same time, with Barsamian hinting that most of the energy is currently being poured into these two projects. An official partnership has not yet been announced, but with a bit of luck, fans of both media could be treated to something new as early as 2025.
The premiere of the film “Sweet Revenge” has already been set for August 13, 2025. While it is not a Friday, the 13th remains symbolic enough, especially for die-hard fans.
Fun fact: The next actual Friday the 13th won’t be until March 13, 2026, but until then, fans of the genre can console themselves with a new chapter of pure slasher history.
And for those wondering why this day in particular is considered unlucky, it’s the combination of Friday (execution day in the Middle Ages) and the unlucky number 13 that made it so sinister.
