Publisher Microprose Software and developer Moonpunch today announced their partnership for the upcoming launch of Kung Fu real-time strategy game Gangs of Asia. First slated to head into Steam Early Access, the title blends Kung Fu 1v1 duels with strategic real-time warfare.

Picking one of four playable gang leaders, each with their own mechanics and personality, we command pixelated armies into battle. The six specialized units planned for release range from powerful Sumo wrestlers to stealthy Ninjas and Kung Fu Masters.

Another part of Gangs of Asia’s strategy layer sees us taking over buildings to generate resources, upgrading units, raising defensive structures to defend our territory, and pushing into enemy lands, where we can duel bosses.

The game primarily focuses on the multiplayer side of things, promising 4-player modes like King of the Hill, Horde, and Total Conquest, all of which are playable either online or in local split-screen.

A single-player campaign isn’t part of the developer’s plans at the moment, but the inclusion of bots does allow us to play when our friends aren’t around.

Gangs of Asia’s initial early access version will include four playable characters, 10 curated levels, as well as experimental levels, Local, LAN, and online multiplayer/co-op support, alongside a level editor.

“Seeing MicroProse return to champion independent developers and unique gameplay ideas is fantastic for the entire industry. In a climate that can often feel driven by large-scale corporate interests, their focus on creativity and passion is a welcome return to form,” the developer wrote in a Steam post.

“They truly seem to understand what it takes to bring a unique vision to life. We are incredibly humbled and grateful for this opportunity.”

Gangs of Asia has been in development for nine years, “built in our spare time with a custom engine and hand drawn pixels” by a team of two game development veterans. While it doesn’t yet have a release date, you can follow it on Steam and watch its latest trailer below.
