TL;DR

  • LEGO Fortnite Expeditions is a four-player PvE game mode with hero class selection and upgrades.
  • It differs from the other two LEGO Fortnite game modes, as it is player versus environment and doesn’t have survival crafting or socialising elements.
  • Players can choose from three Hero classes and embark on missions to earn Hero XP.
  • The response to Expeditions has been positive, though criticism has been aimed at the clarity of the tutorials and the mission objectives.

LEGO Fortnite Expeditions is the latest LEGO-themed game mode introduced to Fortnite. Released on June 18, 2025, Expeditions is a four-player co-op player-versus-environment experience. This differs significantly from the two other LEGO game modes – Odyssey and Brick Life – that are currently available in Fortnite. Odyssey is a survival and crafting open-world game mode, while Brick Life is a life sim and social role-playing game.

Let’s dive deeper into the latest LEGO Fortnite game mode to see exactly what kind of experience it offers players and what the response has been so far.

What is LEGO Fortnite Expeditions?

LEGO Fortnite Expeditions begins with the player enrolling at Supernova Academy. This is where each game session begins. Players then choose between one of three Hero classes: Shadow Caller, Rift Ripper, and The Hunter.

Each class has different skills that can be used in the PvE missions. These skills can also be upgraded via Training Terminals as they progress through missions, earn Hero XP, and level up. Players aren’t locked into the class they initially choose, as they can switch between the three Hero classes at any time when they return to Supernova Academy between missions.

Players get several powers that they can use during missions, which change depending on their chosen Hero class. These powers can be used alongside weapons. Currently, three weapons are available to players to use during missions in LEGO Fortnite Expeditions. These weapons are Plasma Pistols, Dual Daggers, and a War Hammer. They can be purchased from the Supernova Academy at the vendor, but they can also be found when exploring during a mission. Players also get to pick between the Dual Daggers and the War Hammer as their starting weapon when they jump into Expeditions.

Tutorials are provided by various LEGO versions of the Supernova Academy students and staff, such as Vengeance Jones, Morgan Myst, and Hope, to name a few. The character the player needs to speak to will appear in the Assignments tab in the menu, where players can also access their inventory, their class, and the map. Some of these quests are optional, but they offer additional XP and exclusive bundles of decor that can be used in the other LEGO game modes.

Missions are the main element of LEGO Fortnite Expeditions. They put players into a group with three other players and transport them to one of a handful of locations, including Busted Bridge, Spire Excavation Site, and Utopia City. There are more locations planned to be included in the future.

Once a mission has been selected, players are given a series of objectives to complete. This can include rescuing civilians, deploying field generators, and defeating a certain number of enemies. Players can also explore their surroundings during missions to find resources and gear via chests. Another handy collectible found during missions is Essence, which can be used as a currency to buy better versions of weapons at the vendor at Supernova Academy.

How popular is LEGO Fortnite Expeditions so far?

At the time of writing, it’s difficult to get a firm grasp on player opinion of LEGO Fortnite Expeditions as it has only been out for just over a week. The game mode currently has almost 8,000 players, which is a pretty good number considering it hasn’t been out long. The player count isn’t as high as LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, which is currently sitting at almost 23,000 players. However, Expeditions is attracting more players than LEGO Fortnite Brick Life, as Brick Life has around 3,800 players at the time of writing.

Player feedback seems mixed about the mode so far. Reddit user GiustinoWah notes that they are having a lot of fun with Expeditions, but that objective clarity could be smoother: “I feel that missions should have the main objective pinged on the map/screen because too many people aren’t going to do what they have to. Also I think the map should be more clear and the objectives much more evident.” Comments on the thread agree with this statement, and it’s easy to see why. Clarity is a bit of an issue, making things feel more confusing than they need to be.

Another Reddit user, VoreAllTheWay, is much more critical about Expeditions, believing that the mode was released in an unfinished state and criticising the designs of missions. Their final consensus is unforgiving, “this gamemode isn’t in beta, it’s ******* poorly made, what an absolute joke of a gamemode.”

The comments under this thread defend Expeditions, arguing that the OP needs to take some time to learn the mechanics. GracefulExalter states, “It’s actually pretty fun once you figure it out.” Another comment from No_Anxiety_3171 notes that they believe the OP is hating on Expeditions before making the effort to learn it, as they too had the same problems when they first started, “I definitely was discouraged at first. I’ve been really excited for each new game mode and probably should put some more work in before becoming an NPC hater on the internet.”

Conclusion

Although it’s hard to get a thorough grasp on player consensus yet, it’s clear that LEGO Fortnite Expeditions is attracting a fair number of players and has received some positive reviews.

That being said, certain elements of the mode could be improved upon, such as more clarity with mission objectives. However, there is a lot of potential with LEGO Fortnite Expeditions, especially if the mode continues to expand and features significant updates in the future.
